Fuchsia microphylla ssp. microphylla is a deciduous perennial shrub in the Onagraceae family. Its native range is from southern Mexico to Panama. It has one familiar name, which is the Small Leaf Fuchsia. It has been given the name microphylla for the tiny (micro) leaves. It grows in the wild in pine and oak woods or thickets and exposed rocky areas. It can grow to 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide with tiny obovate leaves and pink flowers. The small tubular flowers bloom from September through October and are pollinated by insects. It prefers to grow under light shade to full shade with average water needs. It will need well-drained soil with either acid, neutral, or basic soil. Zones 9-11 Germination Mix equal parts of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat moss. Spread seeds on top of the potting media. Press seeds down into the media. Mist with a spray bottle. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic to maintain a 75F. Place under a bright light until germination.
