Decarya madagascariensis - Zig Zag Plant - Madagascar - 1 Rooted Branching
Decarya madagascariensis, the common name is Zig Zag plant...and sometimes called the Geometry Plant. A rare plant seldom seen in collections and almost never made available for sale. You will receive one (1) rooted branching, (at least 2 branches), cutting, the available cuttings are 7" to 10" in length. The stem has been treated with rooting hormone powder. The available cuttings were made 3/31/2022 from stems shown in the hanging baskets. Cutting will be sent in a plastic baggie with a small amount of soil...the same texture of soil they are grown in. No volume/multi purchase discounts. ** I am a USA (Texas) grower/seller...so there is no more need to order from overseas and run the risks of plant loss due long shipping/transit times or confiscation due to no Phyto Certificate. Some facts about the plant: - Pronounced - Decarya (de-Kair-yuh) madagascariensis (mad-uh-gas-Kar-ee-en-sis) - USDA recommended zones - 10 to 11 - Grow in full sun or bright light - Native to the south and southwest areas of Madagascar in the dry area called the "spine forests" - The plant is a member of the Didereaceae family - This is the only species in the genus Decarya - The current accepted scientific name is Decarya madagascariensis - Other scientific names sometimes used are: Decaria, Decaryia and Alluaudia geayi - The branches consist of 2 small spines on the outside where the stem changes growing directions...hence the common name the Zig Zag plant - Leaves are only present on new growth and they are dark green, obovate shaped- Leaves drop off during colder/cooler temps, and are replaced with new leaves during the growing season - Its branches/stems are silvery in color...new stem growth is brown/green - Its flowers are small pale yellowish/whiteish - The plant is dioecious...meaning it has male flowers and female flowers - In habitat the plant can grow into a small tree 20'-30' tall, can be found as a small shrub - The plant was first described in 1934 by French botanist Pierre Choux - The plant is named in honor of Raymond Decary, a French botanist - The plant is currently CITES listed as 'Near Threatened' Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and I'll tell you what works for me.
