Climbing Hydrangea, Hydrangea anomala petiolaris, Vine Seeds Fragrant Flowering Vine, Exfoliating Bark, Moist Soil Climbing hydrangea is a deciduous vine that grows 30 to 50 feet, climbing by clinging to structures with aerial rootlets. If grown as a ground cover, it can spread up to 200 square feet. Flowers are white and fragrant with flattened clusters (corymbs 6 to 10 inches wide) in a configuration of small fertile flowers in the center with a marginal ring of sterile flowers. Flowers bloom late spring to early summer. Leaves are glossy dark green, 2 to 4 inches long and heart-shaped. Leaves remain on the vine into late fall. Bark is cinnamon brown and exfoliates. Once established, this vine can get quite vigorous and develop a bushy habit with lateral branches growing out several feet from the support structure. This gives the foliage a tiered effect particularly when in flower.
