In spring, when new culms shoot, you can see how fast the Moso bamboo will grow, adult plants may grow around 18 inches a day. It originated in China (region Hainan) and will be 50 - 92 feet tall with culms about 3 - 7 inches thick. Young culms, which are of blue-green color, look as though they were covered with white powder. Leaves hang down like a waterfall. Moso bamboo can remain healthy even at temperatures as low as -20 C. Moso, on the other hand, is unsuitable for fine basketry because it is so stiff, but it is the primary bamboo resource for a variety of products including timber, fencing, furniture, construction material, paper, plywood, flooring, musical instruments and fishing poles. Medicinal use : The leaves are used in the treatment of arthritic inflammations. The sheaths of the stem are used in the treatment of nausea and sour stomach. Edible parts : Young shoots - cooked. Very palatable when cooked but acrid raw. Not of the highest quality, but their large size makes them very popular. Extensively eaten in China, they are usually cooked in one change of water. The shoots are harvested in the spring when they are about 8 cm above the ground, cutting them about 5 cm below soil level. The dormant young shoots, harvested in the winter before they emerge above the ground, are especially relished as a delicacy.Other uses : The canes make good water pipes, they are also used for household utensils etc. The short internodes at the lower end of the cane are used as flasks, vases etc. Although the wood is relatively soft, the canes are much used for heavy construction, weaving various types of handicrafts and paper making.
