Cestrum elegans is a tropical or tender perennial in the Solanaceae family. Some familiar names are Bastard Jasmine, Elegant Cestrum, and Red Cestrum. A native from Mexico. It grows to 7 feet tall and can spread out to 20 feet, I have seen. The flowers are close to an inch long and almost blood-red in color. It blooms from August to March when the berries ripen even darker red. This one grows best in part shade with fertile, well-drained soil. The Hummingbirds pollinate the Cestrum elegans. Zones 8-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-70F. Germination is in 21-30 days.
