Savage Gardeners The "Scarlet Belle" North American Pitcher Plant is a beautiful example of a Psittacina hybrid. It is a cross between a psittacina and a leucophylla and has beautiful red pitchers with large hoods filled with white windows, like a magnificent stained glass window. Unlike other sarracenia that grow long upright pitchers, the pitchers on "Scarlet Belle" grow outward in psittacina fashion, making it a more compact plant. It is a wonderful addition to a collection of sarracenias, especially during spring time when it shoots up a spectacular and fragrant red flower. Like most North American pitcher plants, "Scarlet Belle" attracts insects with a lovely patch of sweet nectar right at the base of the lid. Insects are drawn to this nectar and are encouraged by tiny downward facing hairs to move down into the pitcher. At some point the insect loses its footing and falls down the tube. At this point the bug slowly converted into plant food through digestion by enzymes and bacteria. Yum yum! Your new plant is a medium-sized plant that has pitchers about 3" in length. Growing instructions will be included. Growing Requirements Light full sun Soil pure peat, peat-sand mix, peat-perlite mix, or long-fiber sphagnum Fertilizing do not apply fertilizer - if grown indoors, feed with bugs, dried bloodworms, or fish food Humidity 50-90% Water keep wet at all times, provide water that is low in salts and minerals such as rain or distilled water Temperature 45-90°F Dormancy period winter
