Marcel Breuer's Story Marcel Lajos Breuer was a Hungarian-American modernist architect and furniture designer, known for the Wassily Chair and the Cesca Chair, which The New York Times have called some of the most important chairs of the 20th century. His work includes art museums, libraries, college buildings, office buildings, and residences, among which are: New York's Whitney Museum of American Art (1966) IBM Research Center in La Gaude, France (1961) U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development in Washington, D.C. (1963–1968) UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (1958) He is regarded as one of the great innovators of modern furniture design and one of the most-influential figure in "internationalism" – a major architectural style dominant until the 1970s. Cesca Chair Marcel Breuer created the Cesca Chair shortly after leaving the Bauhaus in 1928 and named it after his adopted daughter Francesca. The chair consists of a tubular steel frame, rattan seat and backrest and inherently tied to the material innovation and design principles he formed at the German design school. While designing the chair, Breuer found inspiration in the tubular steel construction of a bicycle. "Mass production and standardization had already made me interested in polished metal, in shiny and impeccable lines in space as new components for our interiors. I considered such polished and curved lines not only symbolic of our modern technology, but actually technology itself." Whatever the case, these were not the originals (60s) but look like they fit some of the newer versions of the chairs. Differences: 1) the seat back wooden frame is thicker and slightly smaller in height. Does not look as sleek. 2) seat back is a slightly different curvature (not as curved). 3) for both seat and chair, instead of the caning being woven through tiny holes in the seat giving it a clean finished look, the caning is tucked into a groove and kept in place by a band. This breaks up some of the most appealing aesthetic of the chair. It also gives less surface area to the caning so that changes the look. 4) we ordered the black lacquer. The original chair is like a hard shiny black enamel, you can almost see your reflection in it. This one is much more matte. 5) there were tons of areas where the caning was split. Not a hole, just like little tendrils of caning sticking out. We could imagine a few ruined sweaters from that. Also just didn't scream "high quality". In all, not what I expected, but yes it matches the description and likely matches newer versions of the chair. But look up knoll cesca at knoll or lekker's website and you will see those differences. If you want the original, go with knoll. (See the price tag on knoll?
