Its native range is from Central & S. U.S.A. to Mexico. Familiar names include Lemon Mint, Lemon Balm, Horsemint, Bergamot, Lemon Bee Balm, and Beebalm. A drought-tolerant plant that loves the sun and little water. It grows in prairies and along roadsides. Used in salads and teas as well as in seafood and meat dishes. It can grow to 3 feet tall and may spread out to form blankets of flowers. The white, purple, and pink flowers bloom from May through July. In northern regions, they can bloom later. It will die from a frost but will re-seed and grow the next year. It prefers to grow in full sun with little water needs. GerminationYou should use a well-drained clay compost with sand or grit. Sow seeds on top of the soil and tamp in. Lightly cover seeds with fine soil or sand. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep it moist until germination.
